Half a Century goes by, and still…
Thinking back on the 50th anniversary of the weekend at the Fillmore East concert hall in NYC where the Allman Brothers created the magic that became heralded as one of the very best live performance albums to be had.
In my own personal timeline, I wonder how the album came into our household. I know I pilfered it from my brother Ken's pile of records, but where did he get it? We lived some 50 miles outside of New York City and it was a sure thing that there were folks from my town at that concert. Ken had told me he had seen Hendrix there and a young Led Zeppelin too.
In 1972 or so, I bought my first Les Paul, a 1968 Standard Goldtop with P90's. My strongest memory of that guitar and the Fillmore East album was me hovering over the record player, lifting the needle, setting it down, lifting the needle, setting it down. Trying hard to get the notes figured out and get them right.
And now, we can access all the songs from that epic two night performance any number of ways. If you haven't heard The Allman Brothers At Fillmore East, check it out, it still is one powerful capture of the original band in all its glory.
