Reigning Cats and Dogs Chess Set
In 2021 Macdonald collaborated with his wife, visual artist and author-illustrator Lucky Platt, to create a whimsical and functional wood chess set for the gallery show Craft Makers Gambit at Maine Craft Portland in Portland, Maine.
Reigning Cats and Dogs features a band of fight club cats facing off a fashion-forward court of dogs who just want to play. The 32 pieces are shaped from curly maple, sipo, and holly. Each piece is weighted and felted, and features unique pyrography art by Macdonald (cats) and Platt (dogs). The board is made using hand-cut parquetry of bird’s eye maple and fumed oak with a varnish finish. Back stories abound in this imaginative set!
